Flightseeing & Flyouts

Your vacation package likely includes memorable and scenic round-trip floatplane flights between Ketchikan to The Lodge at Whale Pass. But for many, this only whets the appetite for more aerial appreciation of Southeast Alaska. We are happy to arrange for additional flightseeing adventures, chartering operators flying everything from the agile, 4-passenger Cessna 185 and powerful 9-passenger Cessna Caravan to the workhorses of Alaska, mid-1900s vintage DeHaviland Beavers and Otters, and the rugged and surefooted 3-passenger Robinson R44 Raven II helicopter.

Popular flightseeing adventures include an all-out assault by sea and sky on LeConte Glacier to include a landing on the glacier, a boat to plane transfer among the icebergs, and an awe-inspiring air tour of the surreal beauty of the Stikine Icefield.

The smaller floatplanes are an excellent way to access remote fly-fishing streams and lakes for unbelievable angling. We can also arrange an air safari to flightsee the rugged Prince of Wales Island coast waterfalls and 4,000-foot cliff walls, explore the wild and animal filled Pacific coast outer islands, fly over alpine lakes, see humpbacks below the surface, and execute a water touchdown in front of bears foraging on the beach. Animal enthusiasts can buzz craggy peaks and expansive river deltas looking for goat, moose, and bears. Do it in a helicopter and hover next to thundering waterfalls, touch-down on gravel bars in the salmon spawning grounds or explore the habitats of the creatures that each season brings.

Floatplanes and helicopters can provide for unparalleled access to the native cultures of Southeast Alaska. With your pilot as your guide, you can reach the many disparate and remote sites in one day. The village of Kasaan is a living preservation of Indigenous Haida identity and values. A Haida Elder can guide you through old growth forests to discover magnificently preserved Totem Poles and Chief Son-i-Hat’s Whale House, a traditional longhouse. The Tlingit tribe maintains a strong presence in Kake, home to one of the largest Totem Poles in the world. Active carvers are often available to show off their craft. Like many Native villages in Alaska, Kake has struggled from economic challenges. But meeting the people of this community highlights the richness of their relationship to nature, to each other and to their collective heritage. Their lives resonate with the millennia of Tlingit traditions and the power of stories, songs and dances handed down through generations. As an added bonus, the town is very close to one of the more active bear watching grounds in the area.

The more extreme enthusiast can charter a flight 150 miles up the mighty Stikine River to Canada’s Little Grand Canyon for a jet boat ride through the raging ravine. Or commit to a one- or two-day Southeast Alaska flightseeing extravaganza with dog sledding, gold rush history and the unforgettable scenery of the mountains of the Wrangell St. Elias.
